Will Preparation Checklist

Notes to gather before making a will, so the big questions are not all floating around in your head.

People

Write down legal names
Your name, spouse or partner, kids, dependents, and anyone you might name in the will.
Pick an executor
Choose someone organized and trustworthy, plus a backup if possible.
Think about guardians
If you have minor children or dependents, write down who you would want to care for them.

Stuff and Money

List bigger assets
Home, car, bank accounts, retirement accounts, business interests, jewelry, or anything special.
List debts
Mortgage, loans, credit cards, taxes, or anything someone would need to know about.
Check beneficiaries
Life insurance and retirement accounts may have separate beneficiary forms.

Wishes

Decide who gets what
Specific items, percentages, sentimental things, or anything you do not want people guessing about.
Write down funeral preferences
Keep this somewhere easy to find because it may be needed before the will is handled.
Note personal messages
Letters, passwords location, pet care notes, or anything that would help loved ones.

Making It Official

Check local signing rules
Witness and notary rules depend on where you live, so get proper guidance.
Plan to update it later
Revisit after marriage, divorce, kids, moves, big purchases, or changed wishes.
